A man stepped out from behind the wheel of his tour bus to relieve himself, and his life ended when he stepped on an active bomb that may have been buried there for 10 years.

The driver, whose identity has not yet been made public, died instantly while his two female student passengers were injured by flying shrapnel as they sat in the bus. Their identities have also not been revealed, reported Thai PBS.

The bus was on its way to Phetchabun province’s Phu Tap Berk mountain retreat on Sunday morning when the tragic accident happened.

The headman of Ban Tap Berk, Wanchai Chayarom, imagines that the bomb is one of many that were hidden and left in the area years ago when it was a contested zone being fought over by the military and communist rebels.

Officials arrived quickly and roped off the area so that they could search the area for other explosives.
