Miss Universe Thailand has announced that she will wear an elephant-themed outfit as the national costume for the international pageant contest, which is taking place in the kingdom next month.
Miss Thailand Sophida “Ning” Kanchanarin posed in the “Chang the Icon of Siam” costume [Editor’s Note: Chang means elephant in Thai] for the press yesterday evening at the Ancient Siam, a tourist attraction outside of Bangkok. The outfit, designed by stylist Theer Phasuk, represents the importance of elephants in Thailand’s history — how they were once ridden by warriors during times of war, and have since become an overall symbol of the kingdom itself.
The outfit features a traditional Thai gown with a white hood that extends over Sophida’s head and drops down into an elephant’s head and trunk on command.
What a queen.

The finals of the Miss Universe pageant will be held on Dec. 17 at Impact Muang Thong Thani, a popular concert hall outside of Bangkok.
On a related side note, let’s take a look at some of the most creative costumes that have ever taken the stage of Thai pageants — from a tuk tuk, to a durian, all the way to a dead dinosaur and a “tom yum goong” outfit.
