Veteran Italian chefs bring Tuscany to Sathon at ‘Giglio’

Two chefs from popular pizzeria Peppina have opened a new Italian restaurant, this time in a casual, family-style trattoria setting, in Bangkok’s bustling Sathon district.

Tucked next to Scandinavian-style brunch destination Rocket Coffeebar, Giglio Trattoria Fiorentina opened recently to highlight traditional cuisine from Italy’s Tuscany region.

While Tuscany is best known for its beautiful countryside and giving birth to the Renaissance, it also offers cuisine based on the Italian idea of cucina povera or, literally, “poor cooking.” Thus, Tuscan cuisine usually revolves around simple, inexpensive meals with the use of locally sourced ingredients such as farro grain, beans and kale.

The trattoria opened after lockdown measures were lifted in May to allow dining in. In recent weeks, the restaurant, which accommodates more than 30 diners, has been booked every day.

Behind it are chefs Paolo Vitaletti (Appia and Peppina) and Manuelo Pintore (La Bottega di Luca and Peppina) who dedicated the restaurant to the cuisine of Pintore’s homeland, executing in both simplicity and quality.

The pastas are made fresh from scratch every morning, according to Pintore.

Highlights include the Pici al ragu di salsiccia (THB380), a thick hand-rolled soft pasta that’s soft and chewy with a rich sausage and mushroom sauce; and Panzanella (THB250), a classic salad dish of tomatoes, cucumber, celery and toasted Tuscan bread with olive oil and vinegar which combines crispiness and sponginess with a refreshing tang that can cool a hot summer day. French crepe cousin crespella is on the offer here too: Crespelle alla Fiorentina is a baked crepe stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach for THB360.

Find the epitome of Tuscan steaks – bistecca and fiorentina – starting at THB2,400 per kilogram, grilled over wood or charcoal.

There’s no need to say that wine flows heavily in the central region. Giglio offers a long list of wines – all imported from the area – running from THB1,150 per bottle to THB8,900 per bottle.

Giglio Trattoria Fiorentina opens 10:30am to 2pm for lunch, and 4:30 to 10pm for dinner. It is located on Soi Sathorn 12 and can be reached from BTS Chong Nonsi.
