Silom cocktail lounge Vesper’s new drinks contradict themselves

An award-winning Silom cocktail lounge has released new concoctions with a heavy dose of concept.

Juxtapositions of gender, politics and more poured into glasses among the updated drinks under a theme of “contrast” at Vesper, No. 26 on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list this year.

The idea came from a dare to bar manager Supawit “Palm” Muttaratana from the bar’s owners to create new drinks in which two elements are “diametrically opposed” to each other.

“We want to explore two completely opposing ideas and see how we can embrace their differences through contrasting and matching flavors, presentation and ingredients,” Palm said. “If we view them in a single lens, they may reveal that they are not so different from each other after all.”

Palm earlier this year won the inaugural Campari Bartender Competition Asia in Milan. More than 300 bartenders competed for the honor.

Among nearly a dozen of the new cocktails is the vibrant LGBT / Male / Female (Chandon Brut, Cointreau, Tanqueray, strawberry and raspberry jam, and tonic water for THB400). It comes served with a rainbow-layered khanom chan on top.

Also on the menu is the Deep & Shallow (Bacardi Carta Blanca, smoked whiskey, seaweed, coconut, pineapple and citrus for THB370). The Dirty & Clean (Dirty Gin, sherry, charcoal, lemon and passionfruit for THB440) is slowly poured into a glass to create a greyscale gradient effect for the eyes and a refreshing sip for the tongue. The two major strains of American politics just proved unmixable – the Democrat and Republican come in separate glasses (both are THB400).
