Vegetarian Festival 2014 version 1.0 ended yesterday with the discovery of meat in yellow-flagged food ingredients from the Yaowarat area.
Although this isn’t the first time, it came after health officials vowed stricter standards to prevent the meat contamination of the festival’s vegan fare, only to announce yesterday they found animal DNA from a number of faux-meat samples.
Supposedly “meat-free” sausages, fish cakes, salted fish, meatballs and crab meat all contained traces of animal products, according to Apichai Mongkol, inspector general of the Department of Public Health.
The animal DNA was found in seven of 13 samples. All of them came from packages without labeling to indicate their place of production, he added.
Although, some part-time vegetarian eaters may choose to eat imitation meat to get by, Apichart advised they should probably be avoided, Manager reported.
That’s sound advice as this year’s “Je Festival,” will be repeated later this month from Oct. 24 through Nov. 2 because the ninth month of the Chinese calendar is repeated this year.
