From Chiang Mai, ‘Beast & Butter’ opens tasty new front in Bangkok burger wars

Gourmet burgers and “beast sauce” from Chiang Mai’s trendy Nimmanhaemin Road have arrived in the capital Bangkok at a new joint in the core of Thonglor.

Reversing the usual northward flow of trends, Beast & Butter opened last month on Soi Thonglor 10 in a mustard-colored building where hungry diners can feast on premium burgers paired with beers on tap and/or a milkshake.

The highlights are the burgers, of course. Topping the menu is The Beast (THB230), an American-style burger made from baked-in-house brioche buns, organic vegetables, meat patties (beef or pork) and signature “beast sauce.” There’s also the Chipotle BBQ (patty, cheddar cheese, bacon, onion ring, pickled jalapenos and Chipotle BBQ sauce for THB250) and salads such as the Brie Rocket (patty, brie, sun-dried tomato, bacon, rocket and balsamic raspberry jam for THB270)

The place also goes beyond meat – yup, there is a vegetarian burger called Veggie Beast (THB230), which makes use of a veggie patty, cheddar cheese, caramelized onion, cos lettuce, tomato, deep-fried seaweed and Beast Sauce.

Our in-house vegetarian described it as “a welcome departure from the usual binary world of ‘soy’ vs. ‘gardenburger.’” It innovates the flavor matrix with some crispy seaweed adding a savory twist.

Also from personal experience: The sweet potato fries (THB130) are jamming.

Other than burgers, the venue also serves some steaks that come with homemade nam jim jaew, Isaan-style chili sauce and chimichurri sauce. They include the Rib Eye (black angus beef for THB990), Flank (Australian wagyu for THB690) and Pork Chop (“high-welfare pork” for THB400). [Ed. note: WTH is high-welfare pork, beside the weirdest newspeak of today?]

To soak down the food, consider the eight taps of craft beer. They range from a lager at THB250 per pint to an IPA at THB350 per pint. Those who became hopelessly addicted to Dry January can down a cold shake like the Really Dark Chocolate (THB180), Chocolate Peanut Butter (THB190) or Salted Caramel (THB200).

Beast & Butter is toward the Thonglor side of Soi Thonglor 10 and is open 5pm to midnight on weekdays and from 11:30am until midnight on weekends.
