New releases: Sexual tiger girl, dysfunctional gay dad, and gold miners

NATCHA ON FILM — It’s interesting that this week’s Thai films are all about sex. We have “Father & Son” and “Love Next Door 2” which contrast the negative and positive connotations behind homosexual relationships. Meanwhile, “Prom Ma Jan” is all about a woman becoming a sexually obsessed beast. Finally, this week’s must watch English film is definitely “The 33”, based on the Chile mining incident.

Father & Son

I find it weird that the film is called “Father & Son” and the film is about gay relationships.

“Father & Son” is about a son and his father who both like men and are shamed by their community. The dad seems to be having sex throughout the whole trailer but serves no real point in the movie. The son is also off in his own sexual fantasies, while the most twisted part is that the dad sleeps with his boyfriend.

Overall, the movie is pretty messed up and doesn’t seem to have any real plot.

Love Next Door 2

This week is definitely THE week for people who love gay romance films. Here’s another one that’s coming out this week.

“Love Next Door 2” is about a guy being told by a fortune-teller that he can’t have sex for 30 days because it’ll bring him bad luck. Things get tempting for him as an attractive guy begins working at the same cafe as him. They seem to get along really well. And well… as you can guess, he ends up bringing bad luck upon himself.

Prom Ma Jan

What I got from the trailer: there’s a lot of sex, stabbing, blood, tattoos, and tiger roaring sounds.

“Prom Ma Jan”, translated to “virginity” in Thai, is about a woman who had a tragic past of being raped by a man and since then has never felt secure enough to pursue a relationship. She gets lost in the forest where she encounters a strange naked female monster with a tiger tattoo, who transformed her into a sexy tiger beast.

No, it doesn’t make any sense.

The film is actually categorized as an “erotic” film and it actually looks like some softcore porn movie.

Z for Zachariah

Well here’s a new one — an apocalyptic drama.

“Z for Zachariah” is about a woman who is supposed to be the last person on Earth but finds another man who is in the same situation as her. The two grow close together as they think they’re all alone in this world, but then another man soon appears to cause commotion. The three find themselves in a tangled love triangle while grappling with the fact that they are the three final survivors of this world.

Not really feeling this one, especially as it turns into a romantic movie towards the end.

American Ultra

I feel we have way too many of these action comedy films and it’s getting repetitive.

“American Ultra” is about a stoner who spends most of his time getting high and writing comics about a superhero monkey, but he is actually a CIA secret agent who has been trained as a lethal killing machine. When the agency tries to terminate him, his former handler activates his secret skills, turning the laidback dude into a stone cold killer. Now he must use his newfound powers to try to save himself and his girlfriend (played by Kristen Stewart) from being terminated.

The film doesn’t really look that promising and the fact that the emotionless Kristen Stewart is in the film doesn’t make it any better.

LIFE

“Life,” based on a true story, is a biographical drama about the friendship between Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock and Hollywood actor James Dean as they travel around the world on assignment. The film gives us a look at some of Hollywood’s most iconic images and into the troubled life of James Dean.

The 33

Remember the film “127 Hours” where the guy’s arm got stuck between a boulder and he escaped? Well this film is a bit like that.

“The 33” is based on a real event in Chile in 2010 where 33 miners got trapped in a gold and copper cave for 69 days. Above the ground, rescuers worked tirelessly to save the men while those underground fought to survive. The film reveals new facts that haven’t been told, both above and under the ground.

I think I might actually watch this one because it looks decent, despite the hard-to-understand Spanish accent of the cast when they speak English.
