Communities across Myanmar, including Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw, were hit by power blackouts this morning as a result of a broken high-voltage transmission line in the center of the country, which shut down the national power grid.
The 230kV transmission line, running between Thapyaywa and Taungdwingyi, was damaged at around 6am, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The cause of the damage remains unconfirmed.
The statement also said that operations at the Paunglaung station near Naypyidaw resumed about 40 minutes after the power line broke, supplying power to Naypyidaw.
Later, the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation announced: “As of 7:45am, we have restored power to the national grid in Yangon Region. We are now distributing power to all the townships that lost electricity during this period.”
However, by this afternoon, there were still some parts of Yangon that were without electricity.
According to Eleven, the power outage affected Yangon’s traffic lights, causing gridlock traffic all over the city in the early hours of the day.
