A 32-year-old Thai man was hoping that a THB50,000 (about US$1,500) dowry would pave the way to true love with his beautiful girlfriend of three weeks, but after the traditional engagement ceremony held at her family’s home, he never saw her again.

Factory worker Boonchuay Moontham yesterday filed a complaint with Pathum Thani police, saying he believed his fiancée had tricked him into the engagement only to flee with the dowry.

Boonchuay said he first met his fiancée, “Arisa,” who sold products at a market in Nava Nakorn area, on Sept. 3. Shortly after they began dating, Arisa introduced him to her parents and, just three weeks into their relationship, that’s when he faced the big demand.

Boonchuay said Arisa’s family demanded he propose to their daughter if he was serious about dating her and wanted to continue their relationship, Khaosod reported.

Boonchuay complied, he said, because it was what his girlfriend’s family wanted.

“I offered THB20,000 dowry (US$600), but her mother wanted THB50,000 (US$1,500). So I accepted and withdrew another THB30,000 from my bank account. We got engaged on Sept. 24.”

But after the engagement, Boonchuay said that he never saw Arisa in person again. Instead, she would only speak to him on the phone and via the LINE chatting app.

He added that Arisa’s family promised that he could move into their house after the ceremony, but that never happened either, prompting him to finally file a police report.

If all that’s not bad enough, Boonchuay said things actually started getting fishy the night before the engagement, because he caught his girlfriend texting another man. He confronted Arisa, but she said they weren’t married, so she could chat with anyone she wanted.

In the morning, Boonchuay went along with the ceremony anyway, the wisdom of which, we will allow you, dear reader, to judge.

Police are now attempting to track down Arisa and her mother for questioning.
