Twenty-two automatic assault rifles were discovered in the back of a vehicle near a village in Mandalay Region’s Thazi Township earlier this week.

On Wednesday night, local police received a tip and carried out a search of cars passing through the Kywe Tut Sone Toe village entry gate, reports The Voice.

Around 10pm, they stopped a vehicle that was heading from Loikkaw to Mandalay. The car was driven by Nay Soe Htwe Min, with his wife Mya Su Hnin sitting in the passenger seat.

When police searched the couple’s car, they found gunnysacks containing twenty HK assault rifles and two AK-47s in the backseat. The rifles had been wrapped in mattresses and stuffed into the sacks. Authorities also found MMK800,000 on the pair.

Upon interrogation, the couple revealed that they had been paid by a man from Kalay, Kyone Yan San, to transport the firearms from Loikkaw to Mandalay.

A case has been opened against all three culprits under Section 19 of the Arms Act.
