A newborn child was abducted from the Central Women’s Hospital in Mandalay on February 15, and no progress has been made in recovering the infant or in apprehending the suspect in the case.

Aye Aye Thet, the medical superintendent of the hospital, told Eleven that the woman suspected of kidnapping the baby did so after helping the bed-ridden mother in order to gain her trust.

“This is the first time this has happened at this hospital… We have reported the incident to the police and have also warned everyone in the hospital to not trust strangers so easily,” Aye Aye Then said.

The suspected reportedly began cozying up to the victim’s mother at the hospital on February 12 – the day the baby was born – by offering to stay at the hospital and care for the mother. The baby went missing three days later.

The mother, Thin Thin Aye, told Eleven: “[The suspect] accompanied me for two days because my elderly mother was getting too tired. She seemed to be around 30 years old and from a rural area. She mentioned that she was from Meiktila and that she had come to the hospital because her sister was also an inpatient in the maternity ward. She did everything that needed to be done, including changing diapers.”

“On [February 15], she said she wanted to show the baby some sunshine. I got suspicious when they were both gone for an hour, so we started looking. It was then that I knew that my baby was gone.”

The mother continued: “We have reported this to the police, but there is still no news. The hospital has not done much except for give a promise from the medical superintendent that she will look into this matter as a priority.”

“The baby was our firstborn. I request that the authorities do everything in their power to help find my baby,” she said.
