Rangoon Tea House makes naked cakes now and they look rather delicious

Rangoon Tea House, the downtown eatery now more than a year old, is known for its stylish take on classic Burmese dishes.

Now it’s adding something new to the repertoire: naked cakes. (That just means, er, without frosting.)

Pretty damn tasty looking ones too.

Designed in collaboration with Charins Chang – a Jakarta-based pastry chef – the cakes come in six creative incarnations.

There’s Carrot Truffle, with ‘liquid cinnamon, carrot sponge, cream cheese, dried bread frosting, sugar cookie chards….’ , Golden Coffee with ‘Rangoon Tea House coffee, coffee mousse, vanilla almond cookie, marble cookie shards…’, Chai Meringue with ‘chai infused sponge, white chocolate, chai tea mousse…’ OK, OK we’ll stop now.

They’re only available by special order – 3 days in advance – for now and prices are on the higher end of the spectrum. Email info@Rangoonteahouse.com to place an order or call 01242226.

A 15cm cake that feeds eight to 10 people will set you back K43,000 (about $43 dollars) while a dessert for one or two is K7,000. A 25cm beast, fit for 15-20, is K115,000.

RTH staff told us the cakes should be in store fairly soon. In the meantime, stay tuned for a new dessert menu and ‘Burmese gourmet soft serve’ with flavors ranging from toasted sesame to corn-on-the-cob.
