The young man accused of killing and chopping up his mom before storing her remains in the family fridge has succumbed to injuries sustained from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Sira Somdech died later in the day Monday after being rushed to Nakornthon Hospital in southwest Bangkok after shooting himself in the head when a friend of his mother discovered the body parts in the fridge.
Royal Thai Police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen said investigators have collected evidence and sent both mother and son for thorough autopsies. Police are also checking security cameras in the area and questioning potential witnesses and those close to the family.

Beyond possible mental illness, there’s no real clarity as to why Sira decided to murder and dismember his 42-year-old mother. Krissana said nothing has been ruled out and urged the public not to jump to conclusions about the case, saying it would be best to wait for the authorities’ version of events.
Police in southwest Bangkok discovered the remains of Sira’s mother, Yuri Taowan, inside their family refrigerator yesterday afternoon. Next to it they found Sira lying in a pool of blood in critical condition.
Yuri had last been heard from Sunday night, and her friend went to visit her at home on Monday. That woman told police that Sira told her his mother wasn’t there, and then shot himself after she opened the fridge, which was ajar.
Police were told the suspect suffers from depression and had just visited the hospital last week. Officials plan to question Sira’s doctors at Somdet Chaopraya Hospital for a better understanding of his condition.
Sira was a sophomore student at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep.
“I want to eat grilled meatballs,” was the last thing he wrote on social media Monday, just hours before he made headlines.
Many people flocked to comment on the status. While some cursed him for his actions, many said they didn’t believe he really committed the crime amid a wash of turgid-yet-baseless conspiracy theories being voiced online.
