It seems that travelers — and the travel industry — can’t get enough of Phu Quoc. Vietnam’s largest island, half of which is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site, has caught the attention of the curators of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection too.

The property Hyatt is set to acquire is Nam Nghi Phu Quoc Island, and it’ll be the collection’s first in Southeast Asia. This 114-room resort, with 51 villas and 63 guestrooms, should get a revamp and open in the first few months of next year.

Unbound is Hyatt’s group of cultural, historic, and period stays — ones that would never appear to be chain hotels at first glance. They include names like the ancient Chinese Jinmao Hotel Lijiang, also inside a UNESCO World Heritage site that channels the mysteries ancient China steps from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; and The Royal Palms Resort and Spa, a Spanish Colonial Revival villa from the 1920s with desert landscapes outside Phoenix, Arizona at the base of Camelback Mountain.

The Vietnam island resort will make the 13th in the growing portfolio and shows the ever-increasing popularity of Phu Quoc, which has recently hosted world-class music festivals, seen restaurants debut with Michelin-starred chefs, and had five star resorts open. Some travel insiders are calling the island “the next Bali.”

Nam Nghi Phu Quoc, with white sand beaches and never-ending blue sea vistas, doesn’t look like it needs much to be the perfect place to escape from everyday life.

When guests tire of the beach, they can try coral reef sightseeing, kayaking, or fish feeding at the resort’s pier. A wander around the large property also reveals fruit trees that guests can feel free to pick from and snack on, including fig trees.

Another highly-rated guest experience that Hyatt has no plans to change at Nam Nghi is the welcoming sound of the large steel gong at the resort’s gate, which is sounded whenever guests arrive. Young visitors especially love the gong and having a go on it themselves.

The resort’s Tree House restaurant does modern international cuisine and is a favorite even with non-resort guests due to its romantic setting, tasty dishes, and of course, that view.
