Ruckus at Tampines Giant Hypermarket; mentally unsound woman arrested after dramatic standoff

A mentally ill woman recently created a scene at Tampines Giant Hypermarket when she stood on top of a cashier counter, shouting and screaming into the air for an hour while a crowd of onlookers gathered around her.

Attempts to pull her down would only agitate her — security guards who tried to coax her down received green tea spat on them for their troubles. She would alternate between bouts of exasperated screaming and keeping chill, The New Paper reports. Attempts by Giant Hypermarket staff members and security guards were all unsuccessful throughout the hour-long standoff.

Earlier on, she had bee seen running away from another woman; her colleague at semiconductor manufacturer Global Foundries. Seven other colleagues arrived later on, all of them visibly distressed by the woman’s actions. One managed to persuade her to clamber down from the counter.

Police arrived at the scene eventually, arresting the 24-year-old woman under the Mental Health Act, which allows them to apprehend those of unsound mind believed to be of danger to herself or others.

A police officer was overheard telling the woman that they’ve given her many chances before but she had not listened to them. She was later placed in handcuffs before being taken away. Best of luck to her.

The incident is of course remarkably similar to another lady of unsound mind wreaking havoc at a Giant supermarket as well two years ago.
