Youth sentenced to reformative training after foiled knife attack

Coffeeshop assistant and Irwan Syazwani Muhammad, 20, has been sentenced to reformative training after being found guilty of possessing a knife with the intention to stab a teenage girl.

He first met the victim on Dec 31 while friends were camping at East Coast Park.

At around 9pm, the victim, who cannot be identified because of her age, was riding on the back of a friend when she was poked in the buttocks by Irwan.

She immediately requested to be put down on the ground, as she felt her modesty was outraged, according to Channel NewsAsia,

Two days later, Irwan brought a knife wrapped in newspaper to Al-Mukminin Mosque, which he showed two 14-year-old fellow mosque volunteers.

He told them he wanted to stab the victim as she had spread rumours about him, alleging that he had molested her.

The victim’s friends later confronted Irwan, while her boyfriend alerted the police.

Irwan was arrested at about 7:20pm.

He also faced theft charges for stealing cashcards from vehicles to buy food from 7-Eleven stores. He was sentenced to reformative training after a report deemed him unsuitable for probation.

Irwan could have received a maximum two years’ jail for the possession of an offensive instrument and could have received up to two years’ jail and caning for the outrage of modesty.
