A young Myanmar lady appearing to be a domestic helper was recorded on video trying to appeal to her employers’ neighbor for help, claiming she had been physically abused.
Though the truth of the short clip cannot be verified, the lady was pictured with bright red marks on both sides of her cheeks — apparently bruises from being slapped by her employers. Presumably speaking to another domestic worker, the Myanmar lady looked frightened and apprehensive while asking for help, providing a contact number to a “sister” who’s in Singapore. Due to her halting English, it’s hard to make out what exactly she wants, but it’s clear that she doesn’t want to continue working for her allegedly abusive employers.
Uploaded onto All Singapore Stuff, the Facebook page noted that the Ministry of Manpower has been notified of the case.
Despite the relatively developed status of Singapore compared to our regional neighbors, the city-state has a pretty frightening reputation for prevalent cases of domestic worker abuse. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that a significant portion of migrant domestic workers — especially those from Myanmar — working in Singapore may very well be underaged.
