Vong Vui Kong spared the gallows, makes history

25-year-old Yong Vui Kong will live, making him the first death-row inmate convicted for drug-related crimes to be spared the gallows.

News of this were first announced in mid-September after Yong had assisted the Central Narcotics Bureau in internal investigations.

The pardon brought about by his co-operation, as well as massive crowdsourced support against the death penalty in Singapore, means Yong now faces 15 strokes of the cane and a lifetime in prison, instead of death by hanging.

Yong was arrested and placed under the death penalty in 2008 for possession of 47.27 grammes of heroin. He was 19 years old at the time.
