A year in jail for elderly gambler who colluded with three dealers to clean up at poker

An attempt to get rich quick by cleaning house at the poker tables ended up in a one-way trip to jail for an elderly man who colluded with three Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) Casino croupiers.

65-year-old Chua Lai Huat befriended the three dealers in May and June this year, and he managed to convince them to give him an unfair advantage at the tables, Channel NewsAsia reports.

The plan involved Chua bending the edges of his Ace and King cards when they were dealt to him. He would also mark Ace and King cards with an improvised rheumatism plaster, which would allow him to identify the cards in subsequent games. The croupiers would also flash the last card in the dealer’s deck to Chua, giving him a further advantage in making informed decisions on whether to fold or play on.

The winnings he received from the scheme totalled about $12,915 over a period of two months — $1,200 of which were given to the three dealers.

In court, Chua pleaded guilty to 10 counts of cheating at play and was received a year’s jail sentence. Two of his colluding dealers have also been jailed, while the third one remains at large.
