Hopping on board the plastic-free movement, Yakult Singapore announced last Thursday on Facebook its initiative to remove straws from its Yakult and Yakult Ace Light products from the end of December. Its switch to become more Earth-friendly in the new year is part of its efforts in “contributing to environment protection and sustainability”, the brand said.
That means all you Yakult straw drinkers out there will have to be content with chugging the probiotic milk drink straight from the bottle (rightfully so).
The response on social media has been largely supportive, although most people noted that 1) the bottles are plastic, and 2) they’re shrink wrapped in… plastic. One step at a time – perhaps the company will look into an alternative for its plastic bottles next.
This environmentally conscious move comes on the heels of other brands in Singapore bidding goodbye to single-use plastic straws this year. Namely KFC, Starbucks, Burger King, and Resorts World Sentosa.
Guess it turns out life in plastic just ain’t fantastic.
