WTF story of the day: King of Fruit sparks evacuation

OK, so we know a lot of people don’t appreciate the smell of durians. But stinky as it is, Singapore has never let a chance to make it a campaign element pass… ever.

We use durian in our savoury cooking and desserts, heck we even designed an entire arts and entertainment hub (read: Esplanade) based on its thorny shell.

So when we found out an entire street of shoppers was cleared out because a bunch of durians was “in the house”, we couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

According to The Plymouth Herald, firemen arrived at the row of Premier Stores located on New George Street on Oct. 18 to evacuate the area after customers complained of the strong smell of gas.

Some of the places that emptied out were Betfred, Burger King and Cash Converters.

But it turned out, the smell was only that of a big delivery of durians received by Asian grocery store YW Foods, which was located behind New George Street.

“Some of the firefighters came in and asked if we had gas, we said no and said it might be the fruit as they have a strong smell,” YW Foods worker Lotus We told the newspaper.
