A pair of canoeists from the National University of Singapore (NUS) were training for a marathon at the Kallang Basin when they were ‘rescued’ by the Sports Hub water sports centre.
A concerned resident had spotted them ‘struggling’ to maintain balance and had called the venue to report it.
Truth is, the athletes were only trying to empty the water from within their canoe, which is the “right protocol”, according to the centre’s director Mr. Calvin Palyama.
Mr. Palyama had gone out on a safety boat with a colleague after receiving the call, and had found the pair in at the edge of the Kallang Basin.
“They were okay and back in their boat, but it was filled with water and sinking,” he told The New Paper.
Sounds a bit “bo liao”, but, better safe than sorry, right?
The resident, a Mr. Stuart Ross, didn’t see other students in the same vicinity of the two canoeists, and observed they were acting like “beginners”.
“Next time, if in trouble, put your hands up, so others can see you and get help.”
