Since the resignation of Member of Parliament David Ong last weekend, Singapore will undergo its third by-election in four years. Up for grabs is Ong’s vacated seat for the Bukit Batok Single-Member Constituency, and opposition parties have wasted no time in declaring their decision to contest the ward.
Players who’ve thrown their name into the ring include the Singapore Democratic Party and the Democratic Progressive Party, with others like the National Solidarity Party and the People’s Power Party undecided as of yet, according to The Straits Times.
But one thing’s for sure: The Workers’ Party will not be part of this fight. Chairman Sylvia Lim acknowledged their withdrawal from the by-election due to the fact that the WP hasn’t covered much ground with residents in that area, and Bukit Batok SMC has traditionally been contested by SDP, reported TODAY.
For now, Desmond Lee, MP for Jurong GRC, will look after Bukit Batok, and Ang Wei Neng, also a Jurong GRC MP, will assume the role of Jurong-Clementi Town Council chairman.
