600 employers in Singapore deny workers basic rights

Following the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) inspections on employers from September 2012, it has been revealed that workers were not granted basic employment rights by at least 600 employers, according to a report by Channel NewsAsia.

Out of all the rights mentioned including medical leave, overtime payment was infringed on the most.

Speaking at the WorkRight Roadshow on Nov. 9, Acting Minister for Manpower Mr Tan Chuan-Jin said even though there may be employers who deliberately flout the law, the majority are responsible and there are a few who are genuinely unaware of their obligations under the employment laws.

Mr. Tan also said the ministry is stepping up efforts to educate this particular group of employers.

None of the 600 employers have been prosecuted so far, but it has been warned that employers who breach the law under the Employment Act may be fined up to SGD10,000 or jailed up to one year.
