The boys are back. The absurdist foodie duo from Thai restaurant review site Wongnai.com has once again shown their prowess for modern internet humor with Singapore as their backdrop.
After showcasing their poker-faced love for Tan Quee Lan Street’s Thai noodle store Kin Moo last year, the table-slapping routine makes a return — this time at Newton Hawker Centre. Yeah, yeah, we all know that the food hall that made an appearance in Crazy Rich Asians is an unabashed tourist trap with overpriced fare, but the Wongnai duo makes it work.
With their trademark deadpan delivery and orgasmic food cinematography, Alliance Seafood (already an iconic, award-winning stall in itself) gets the viral thump of approval from Hoy Salah. His ecstatic reverie this time (spoiler alert) is an emergence from a sandy crab-strewn beach.
In the second part of the Wongnai.com clip, we get to see why the duo have been in town recently. The Singapore Tourism Board brought them over to pimp out the country’s landmarks and the slogan “Passion Made Possible”. A little corny, but it’s great to see the two riding on electric scooters across the city.
The third part, as explained by our colleagues at Coconuts Bangkok, is a little skit that has a lady feeding Hoy Salah with food embedded with nails — presumably hexing him. She then sends someone a text message that says “it’s done”. Her phone wallpaper is then revealed to be a picture of Hoy Salah’s partner in crime, Lamsong. What a twist!
