A woman was charged on Tuesday (Aug 15) for withholding a total of $5,700 in monthly salaries and rest day pay from her Myanmar maid for almost one year. According to a statement by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Li Jun faces 13 charges for failing to pay her employee from Mar 7 last year to Feb 21 this year.
The 30-year-old has now been banned from hiring a foreign domestic worker, reported Channel NewsAsia.
Her case will be heard on Sept 12, and if convicted, she could be fined up to $10,000 and sentenced to a maximum of 12 months for each charge.
MOM said that a foreign domestic worker must be paid no later than seven days after the last day of the salary period, which cannot exceed one month. Employers have to keep a monthly salary record and receive written acknowledgement of payment from their employees.
The ministry added that foreign domestic workers should “immediately raise the matter to the employer” if they have not been paid. Should the issue continue, the worker should report the case to MOM or ask for help from the employment agency.
