Woman allegedly absconds with over $10m in remittance money to China

A whole group of Chinese nationals here just got duped by a friend who offered to remit their money back home at attractive exchange rates.

The amount of money 38-year-old former lounge singer Li Xia absconded with? Over $10 million.

Lianhe Zaobao reported that Li — a permanent resident who moved here from Chongqing 10 years ago — had offered to convert Singapore dollars at better exchange rates than the market. About 200 people were reportedly involved in the alleged remittance scam, as it dawned upon them that their money had not been credited into their bank accounts.

They’ve since sought out help from the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, who have in turn contacted the relevant authorities here.

According to Li and her Singaporean husband’s domestic helper, she was last seen carrying a suitcase before she disappeared a couple of days ago. Attempts by the victims to contact or find her have not been successful.

Police are on the case.
