Wireless@SG initiative launching next month to provide outdoor WiFi at Sentosa’s Merlion Walk

Probably part of an effort to get folks to actually visit Sentosa, the tourist trap little island down south could soon get free WiFi outdoors as part of a Wireless@SG initiative.

Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim announced today that the Green WiFi pilot will have wireless internet coverage extended only to the outdoor area along the Merlion Walk — and apparently, it’ll be solar powered too.

At the Infocomm Media Business Exchange (imbX) today, Dr Yaacob was reported by Channel NewsAsia as saying that Wireless@SG could be expanded to more outdoor areas in mainland Singapore should the pilot be successful. The initiative at Sentosa will be launched next month and end in September 2017 as part of a joint collaboration with local telco M1, Sentosa Development Corp, Aruba Networks, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and local tech firm Skylab.
