With the biggest lottery pot ever up for grabs tomorrow, it seems like all Singaporeans are in the mood to gamble.
People queued over the horizon in neighborhoods and at shopping malls yesterday, scenes of which have spread as punters patiently wait to submit their lucky six numbers in hope of winning the Toto Hongbao’s largest ever jackpot of S$16 million (US$11.9 million).
Snaking queues were spotted in the Hougang, Yishun, and Jurong neighborhoods and in the Fu Lu Shou Complex, where lines poured out onto pavements, down staircases, and even carpark roads.
Gambling stat board Singapore Pools said the prize “snowballed” after no one won last week’s draw of S$1.6 million and Monday’s S$4 million prizes.
The S$16 million is the highest since the Hongbao draw was introduced in 2000. Last year’s annual draw prize was close to S$12 million.
Toto is a lottery game where players pick at least six numbers between one and 49. Each draw, six winning numbers and an additional number are drawn. Players with at least three of the winning numbers will win a cash prize.
After the draw is conducted at 9:30pm on Friday, the jackpot will be shared by those with all six chosen numbers.
To accommodate as many gamblers, Singapore Pools will be extending operating hours at its outlets tomorrow until 9pm.
