Singapore’s gloomy rainy season has gone from forming doomsday clouds and blazing lightning bolts to yet another occasional sighting — a waterspout.
A lone waterspout was spotted off the southern coast of Singapore at around 4pm yesterday, just before thunderous showers covered the area. Some even decided to give it a chase.
“Chasing the waterspout with our Rib boat 😍😍 Didn’t expect to see this in Singapore!!! Thumbs up!!” tour company Unitime SG wrote online yesterday, including a video of the vortex from what looks like a speedboat.
The water tornado was reportedly located between Sebarok Island and St John’s Island and lasted for at least five minutes. According to the National Environment Agency, they can grow up to 100 meters wide and twirl for up to half an hour before dissipating when it reaches the coast.
Singapore’s unpredictable weather has met with several storms in recent months, with the rest of this week’s forecast also looking bleak. Showers are expected over the coming days.
