Infamous enfant terrible Amos Yee is facing trouble in the Singapore courts once again for allegedly wounding religious feelings — a feat made possible by his devoted efforts in disproving religions in his YouTube videos.
His latest undertaking involved taking down the teachings of Islam, quoting verses from the Quran and arguing against its tenets — before tearing pages off his copy of the religious text and… humping it.
Way more popular YouTuber Karim Metwaly however chose to respond to Yee’s video with his own. The Muslim New Yorker deconstructs the teen’s arguments with context and verses from the Quran, sans the gaudy crudity.
Agree or disagree with Karim’s explanations, but at least he defends Yee’s right for free speech, condoning his arrest and the recent awkward confrontation at Jurong Point.
“He should exercise his right to free speech, because it brings people like me and other Muslims to actually look in, do research, and bring us back to our religion,” Karim concludes. “So he’s actually doing us a favour”.
