Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) field rations are generally considered to be Not Good. They’re mushy, they’re bland and, more often than not, look like puke — something we imagine is not unlike the partly digested food parent birds regurgitate into their hatchling’s mouth.

Delectable.
Delectable.

But it is what it is, and MREs are necessary, hearty meals with a long shelf life that can be easily distributed and kept — an invaluable item during wartime and disaster relief operations. Plus, rations these days have actually improved in quality from the tasteless muck eaten by soldiers of yore. The MREs eaten by today’s servicemen vary in taste and are even suited to local palates, including rations consisting of Nonya curry, sambal chicken, glutinous rice and sesame chicken noodles.

But don’t take it from us, take it from the folks in the United States Armed Forces who really liked the Singaporean rations. Of course, it’s possible that they’re just being polite on camera, but their smiles seem genuine enough.
