Apparently, the lost and found property department of SMRT is a pretty happening place, where a random assortment of misplaced items end up on a regular basis. According to Service Ambassador BeBe Merina — also known as “Nenek Rock” (rocking grandmother in Malay) to her grandkids — commuters have left behind everything from saucepans and rice cookers to cell phones and laptops to e-scooters and fans to champagne and beer bottles on trains (or at train stations).

“I’m just like NTUC FairPrice,” the quirky lady jokes, adding that she enjoys the “puzzle solving” part of her “detective” job and sometimes goes out of her way to hunt down the owners on Facebook.

She explains that when lost items are found, SMRT keeps them for three days; and if they’re left unclaimed, they go to her. On her part, she’ll tag the items and store them for three months. After that, if nobody comes forward to claim the stuff, those in good condition will be donated to charity.

With 1,000 lost items coming through each month, you can imagine her job is quite the busy one.
