A single mother had to contend with navigating her transition from man to woman while raising a daughter all on her own.
The mother shared her story in a video by local non-profit The T Project on March 31, which marks the Transgender Day of Visibility – a day to celebrate transgender people and raise awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide.
The nonprofit announced on Sunday that they are planning to launch a support group for transgender people with families and children. Interested parties can contact them on their website.
In the video, the mother – who was not named – said that she never saw herself as a transgender woman growing up.
However, by the time she was 10, she – who was male-presenting at that time – realized she liked to wear dresses.
After the mother divorced with her partner when their daughter was nine years old, she grew even more curious about her deeper inclinations.
“I started to puzzle and think about why I have such a hobby (of wearing dresses),” she said.
That was the moment she stumbled upon a local transgender forum called SgButterfly, which hosts articles and discussions for transgender people in Singapore.
After reading through the material provided, she decided to text her daughter to ask her how she would feel “if Daddy became Mummy”, in her own words.
“I was very sure of my reply, which was that it doesn’t matter whether you were my Daddy or my Mummy,” said the daughter. “It didn’t feel like something very big.”
Throughout her transition, the mother also had to contend with feeding the family as the sole breadwinner, sometimes spending overtime at her work just to make ends meet.
“Even though it’s not that easy, each one of us supports each other,” said the mother.
Such a heartwarming tale. Watch the full video below:
