If you need more proof that the police are upping their social media game and winning our hearts (check out previous puns, wisecracks, and even musical medleys), here’s how they recently educated the public on anti-scam awareness — by actually “scamming” shoppers at Jurong Point Mall.

With an innovative spin on the typical mall roadshow, Bukit Batok Neighborhood Police Centre (NPC) set up a booth in the building atrium hawking branded shoes for just S$30 under a new company called Liaison (as in the “lie is on”, geddit?) on Jan. 28.

Since the sale was pretty affordable and it took place in a commercial space in broad daylight, most shoppers probably thought there was no harm in paying up to secure the deal.

Unfortunately, it did turn out too good to be true — after the money was collected, the shoppers were ushered behind the curtain, where they were shown a video on e-commerce scams. Some were surprised, while others wondered whether they’d get their money back.

Following that, Bukit Batok NPC team leader Mohamed Fadzil Mohamed Hisum spoke to them and revealed that e-commerce scams were the most common in Singapore, with victims usually between 22 and 49 years old.

Check out what went down in the vid below.
