Watch Out: Many beer vendors are charging beyond the liquor duty hike

A survey done by consumer rights organisation CASE reveals eat least eight food and beverage (F&B) vendors in Singapore have marked up their beer prices beyond the calculated excise duty increase.

Channel NewsAsia report reveals the biggest price hike was $1.30 for a can of Tiger Beer at a Kopitiam outlet in Serangoon, and the second highest was $1.20 for the same at a Kopitiam outlet in Simei.

According to the report, CASE did the survey because of consumer feedback on the price hikes for beer following Finance Minister Tharman Shanmuragatnam’s announcement of the increase in liquor duty.

CASE had surveyed 23 F&B vendors in areas where customers complained beer prices had been raised by more than a dollar.

Tiger Beer was picked as a constant because it’s the most popular beer sold at coffee shops.

CASE is urging customers to make informed choices on their purchase of liquor and encourage them to buy only from those that offer good value for money.
