Regarding the issue of acceptance for the LGBTQ community here, the general belief is that younger people are more receptive and open while the older generation are the ones who are conservative and reject the notion that they should be given equal treatment.

Inclusive Singapore, however, wants to buckle that perception. In a video feature, some older Singaporeans were gathered and interviewed, and what they’re saying is that not all in their generation are as hostile to gay people as one would think.

The highlight of the clip? A delivery by 68-year-old Catherine Sng that dismisses the common argument by conservatives against repealing 377A that involves the need to uphold “Asian values”.

“The law was set by who? Wasn’t it set by them (the West)? They said that what two people did behind doors was illegal because they were of the same sex. Crazy.

It was them who taught us. Look into Chinese law history and see if they had that law. They did not have it. Our Singapore government followed them — the law that is passed from the West. They set it in.

So now when they talk about ‘openness’, it is not them who is open. Rather, openness is a state of mind. It’s how you view things.”
