In true Singaporean fashion, a group of motorists who wanted to save 50 cents risked getting fined by the Traffic Police when they waited out the shutdown of an Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantry.
Again, we have to stress that the toll was just 50 cents to pass through the gantry. Truly a testament to how stubbornly cheap we Singaporeans can get.
A video of the incident surfaced on Saturday morning, depicting at least five drivers stopping along the left-most lane right in front of an ERP gantry at an unknown location, with just about a minute left to go before it switched off. As soon as it did at 8pm, the fleet of vehicles moved off, with the motorists managing to save 50 cents — not even enough to get a cup of kopi at a coffee shop.
Folks pointed out that the amount they’ll be paying for fines should they receive summons will be far greater than the measly amount they saved that night. It is considered an offense after all for motorists to stop along road shoulders without valid reasons — liable to a composition fine of up to $160 and four demerit points.
