Since 1972, Singapore has implemented a permanent ban from using firecrackers over concerns of public safety. The government started regulating its use in 1968, when a third of the 150 fires that broke out during the Chinese New Year celebrations were caused by fireworks. Despite the regulations, folks were still unclear about the rules resulting in the continued use of firecrackers — culminating in six people killed, 25 injured and over $560,000 in damages to property in 1970.
Nowadays the ban has only been tweaked to utilize firecrackers for public events only, with appropriate safety measures implemented.

Of course, in residential environments we feel obliged to insist not to try this at home, unless you want the cops to get called on you.
