A Japanese couple, Eitaro Ogawa and Tamae Iwasaki, both in their 40s, came up with the concept of capturing the essence of Singapore’s HDB flats in photographs three years ago, while they were on the hunt for a place to live in. Intrigued by the character and charm of each unit they visited, all of which reflected their owners’ personalities, the Singapore permanent residents roped in Tomohisa Miyauchi, a lecturer at the National University of Singapore’s department of architecture.
For three years, they journeyed from home to home — some were owned by mutual friends, others were strangers who welcomed them into their flat — to take photos of more than 100 HDB flats and talk to the people who lived there.
Plans are in the pipeline to compile the images into a photo book titled ‘HDB: Homes of Singapore’ and publish 2,000 copies of it by next year.
