WATCH: How police broke into Sembawang Drive flat to rescue the 2-year-old hostage

17 hours — that’s how long a 2-year-old boy was held hostage in a Sembawang flat before the authorities stormed the unit in a dramatic rescue.

A 39-year-old man had locked himself in the flat with his girlfriend’s son on Tuesday evening and refused to open the door even when the police were called in. The tense situation carried on overnight as he barricaded himself in the flat while various agencies, including the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) and the police’s Special Operations Command (SOC), stood ready for a rescue.

Things came to a climax yesterday afternoon when the police decided enough was enough and brought down their wrath. Watch below to see how the officers broke into the unit in a rip-roaring end to the Sembawang standoff.
