One of the main arguments that Singaporeans against the abolishing of Section 377A of the Penal Code usually make is the fact that decriminalizing sex between consensual men will erode family values and even destroy the family unit in the country.
These Singaporean families, however, believe differently. And they certainly have something to say about the need for an inclusive society that welcomes everyone, no matter their sexual orientation.
In a video published by newly-created YouTube channel Inclusive Singapore, heterosexual families speak on how the acceptance of LGBTQ people does no harm at all to straight families, or even destroy the concept of families.
“Alcohol is harmful for families. Domestic violence is harmful for families. I think there are lots of other social issues that are harmful for families,” pointed out one interviewee.
One of the more prominent voices in the video is none other than renowned local thespian Pam Oei, who’s been a longtime LGBTQ ally. Earlier this month, the actress and her husband posted a message of support for the repealing of Section 377A on Instagram.
“We’re talking about the law, this has nothing to do with religious beliefs. We are a secular country and must remain so,” she wrote in her contribution to the online movement Ready 4 Repeal.
“You can continue to hold your religious beliefs even if this law did not exist. It will not change a thing, except that approx 10% of our population will no longer be criminals. It is no skin off anyone’s back. You will not suddenly become homosexual if this law is repealed. Really, promise.”
