Comics World opened up shop in 1987, and it’s been one of the go-to stores for comic book fans in Singapore since many of its competitors shuttered over the decades. Crammed with shelves full of superheroes, mutants, monsters and creatures from far away galaxies, the 30-year-old space is run by Bill Teoh, a former police officer now in his 80s.

In a funny twist of irony, during the 1970s, Teoh actually sat on a government censorship board that contributed to the ban of several now-beloved comics in Singapore. It was only when comics saw a surge in popularity in the 1980s that he decided to start his own business — and it’s now become the oldest comic book store in the country.

Though he keeps the store stocked with hundreds of titles, Teoh’s favorite comic character is Batman — because of his past in law enforcement, he relates to Bruce Wayne being a ‘smart detective’.

Comics World is at B1-22 Park Lane Shopping mall, 35 Selegie Rd.
