After a $54 million revamp three years in the making, the Church of St Alphonsus — widely known as Novena Church — has revealed its stunning new look. Reopening with its first mass on Sept 29 at 6:30pm, the 67-year-old church — one of Singapore’s most iconic Catholic churches — features a new Gothic-inspired sanctuary connected to the original conserved 1950s building, with 18 stained-glass windows, high arches, and a dome, reported The Straits Times.

To capture it in all its glory, photographer and videographer Jothy John documented the reconstructed building with footage shot entirely by a drone over the course of more than 10 hours (of flying time). He also assisted the church’s archival team in taking photos and videos of the old building before parts of it were torn down.

It was an honor for him to be approached by the church committee for the project, he told Channel NewsAsia.

“Novena Church has been an integral part of my growing up years and it is still a very important part of my life and my family’s,” he explained. “With so many restricted flying zones around Singapore, this has been my practice playground.”
