WATCH: A documentary on the complicated plight of Singapore’s stateless residents

While many of us residents who spent our whole lives in Singapore are able to reap the benefits of citizenship like subsidised housing and affordable education, there exists a small portion of those who can’t, due to the fact that they’re officially stateless.

These folks have the unfortunate status of belonging to no country, even though they may be born right here. Though some may eventually obtain citizenship, many others remain in administrative limbo for years. It may not even be a fault of their own — some stateless folks inherit the status from parents who renounce citizenships or were not able to produce proof of identities.

In a fascinating feature explored by TODAY, read on about the challenges faced by those stateless in Singapore.
