It took a wildlife photographer/otter enthusiast approximately 20 to 30 hours of attempted footage to capture a one-minute video showcasing two adult otters climbing up a metal ladder from a drain. He had observed the creatures clambering up ladders a few weeks ago by chance, and decided to record proof of his discovery.
According to him, the otters displayed curiosity about artificial objects as well — in particular, the iPhone that his video was shot on. One wonders what would happen if the animals had actually carried his phone down the chasm.
This video is just the latest of many observations on how otters have been adapting to Singapore’s urban environment in recent years. Just last Thursday at an Art-Zoo event for i Light Marina Bay, a family of otters was seen lazing about on the Marina Bay Floating Platform’s artificial grass patch (pictured, above).
Perhaps in the near future we’ll see the semi-aquatic mammals completely shed their natural habitat to live alongside humans. Who knows?
(But for real, it’s advised to let the otters go about their daily activities undisrupted — so just be content to admire them from a distance).
