If you work in the CBD, you may have walked past an UberEATS delivery auntie making her way to an office with hot food. Or perhaps you were on the receiving end of said meal. But you probably wouldn’t have realized that the enviably youthful-looking lady was 70 years old.

Dressed in funky, fashionable attire — complete with a scarf, sunnies and a hat — Teo Yoke Lan makes deliveries around the Raffles Place and Tanjong Pagar area on foot. Apparently she’s been doing it since January this year, after her Uber-driving son introduced her to the job that would keep her active and fit. Teo uses a scooter — pushing it around as a trolley to lug the UberEATS bag — and rides it occasionally when the destination is further afield.

For about $1,000 a month, Teo works from 10am or noon till about 10pm, making over 10 deliveries each day. But if she’s not up to work on a particular day, she simply goes offline. And since it’s all about technology these days, Teo has gone from merely using her phone as a calling device to using the GPS and reading maps. Even her English has improved, thanks to the job.
