After many months of searching, Singapore’s stronghold for the arts have found a new person to take charge of their operations.
The fifth person to take on the mantle of The Substation’s Artistic Director is none other than the prolific Alan Oei, whose work in the visual arts and vision for the 25-year-old venue have impressed its Chairman.
“In our discussions with Alan, we were impressed by the strength and clarity of his vision for The Substation,” says The Substation chairman Chew Kheng Chuan.
“As a former Associate Artist, Alan has an intimate understanding of The Substation’s spirit as a home for the arts,” he continues. “This, coupled with his extensive experience in working with the arts community, gave us added belief that he will be able to retain the essence of The Substation while steering it in a new and exciting direction with a focus on public engagement.””
Oei’s past portfolio include being the Artistic Director of Sculpture Square and being the founder of OH! Open House, the popular arts walkabout. His works as a curator have seen shows such as Blackout (2009) and Campaign City (2013) carried out successfully, while his own artistic works have been exhibited in numerous group shows and solo exhibitions.
“In this time when the State and market dominate art practice and discourse, it is imperative that The Substation provides an alternative re-imagining of Singapore’s cultural conversations,” says Oei of his new responsibility. “I’m deeply humbled and honoured to be entrusted with the artistic vision of The Substation.”
