Vigilantes of the Internet: Singapore’s growing community of ethical hackers

Singapore’s community of white hat hackers are reportedly growing, posing as cyber guardians by testing out security of information systems and reporting flaws where found.

In a report by TODAY, these ethical hackers have tasked themselves with aiding instead of causing harm to vulnerable websites through providing valuable information to website runners about the strength of their data security. The existence of Singapore’s cybersecurity watchdogs have been brought up in recent weeks in light of the recent spate of insecure data incidents, namely  M1’s iPhone 6 pre-order site vulnerability and Kbox’s customer data leakage.

National University of Singapore computer science post-grad student Zhao Hainan managed to hack into the M1 site and subsequently alerted the company regarding the easy access to the customer’s personal data, including phone numbers and home addresses. Other than individual cyber vigilantes like him, there are collectives and groups of cybersecurity experts such as the Singapore Security Meetup Group that perform authorised checks on website vulnerabilities.
