Videos showing an elderly woman being assaulted by her neighbour went viral on Facebook on Sept. 28.
Du Xiulan, 65, was making her way back to her unit after exiting the lift when her neighbour came out and started hurling verbal abuse at her. The situation escalated into a violent one when Du retaliated with a slap on the face of her neighbour after being shoved.
The neighbour then yanked her by the hair when Du tried to walk away and what followed after was a brutal beating that lasted almost 20 minutes.
According to Maggie Goh, the daughter-in-law of the victim, the harassment started a month ago when the woman had accused Du of lodging a police report against her. The woman even threatened to beat her up and on one occasion, even hit one of Du’s daughters. The family then sought the approval of the Housing & Development Board (HDB) with regards to installing a CCTV, but the measure taken did not deter the woman from turning violent.
The 40-year old woman has been arrested and investigations are ongoing.
